Webflow Labs launches first product: Figma to Webflow plugin

Webflow Lab

A few days ago, Webflow opened its innovation department Webflow Labs* presented. Webflow Labs is focused on developing new ideas and promoting longer-time horizon projects that can help support Webflow's mission and vision of empowering everyone to develop for the web.

Webflow Labs - Product launch: a plugin for Figma!

Figma has developed from a newcomer to an all-star in the design industry in a very short time. But like most design tools, the possibilities stop when prototyping and until now, Figma designs had to be recreated 1:1 in Webflow. Webflow bridges the gap with its new plugin and allows Figma designs to be converted into fully functional websites via copy & paste.

What do you have to consider?

In order for the Figma design to be copied to work, the elements must be structured similarly to Webflow, autoLayout must be used and the layers must be properly named. With this plugin, Webflow already provides several templates that can be inserted into Figma with one click and then integrated into the Webflow page via copy & paste. This video explains very well how the new Figma to Webflow plugin works.

Is Webflow future-proof?

In my opinion, Webflow did everything right by developing this tool. This shows that Webflow is future-proof, is at the forefront and has become an integral no-code tool. With this plugin alone, Webflow will certainly be very popular in the near future and will continue to grow. For us Webflow designers, this means that we can remain true to our specialization for the next few years. Webflow is on the right track once again and is doing everything it can to stay modern and up to date.

Is the plugin bad for pure Webflow developers?

There may be some voices who say that this tool is not good for pure Webflow developers, as development with Webflow is becoming too easy and pure developer jobs could be omitted.

This is currently not the case, as only static websites can be created with the plugin. That means there is still a need for a Webflow developer who sets up the entire project, does the fine-tuning, has to create CMS, e-commerce, memberships, animations and more. You also need Webflow knowledge to create the Figma design.

At the moment, I see the plugin as a great way to reduce the development time of a website, which will make us and every customer happy. In the Webflow community, there is almost exclusively positive feedback about the Figma to Webflow plugin. I am pleased that Webflow has taken this step and will therefore remain the number one no-code tool in the future.

How could the plugin develop in the future?

In the future, it would be possible for the entire website, including animations and CMS features, to be created in Figma and be perfectly integrated into Webflow with just one click. It would also be possible for Webflow and Figma to merge and for websites to be published directly via Figma. So it definitely makes sense to master Figma and use it as a design tool.

I'm excited about where the journey is going and I'm looking forward to the opportunities that such new achievements bring.

Either way, we will be able to visit very exciting websites in the near future.
