Webflow is packed with features, one of these impressive features allows you to build a website in the designer and then export the code. Note, however, that this option is only available to users on the Freelancer plan or higher.
Why should you export the code?
Here are a few reasons:
1. Free choice of host: With the exported code, you're not tied to a specific hosting service. You have the freedom to run your website on the hosting service of your choice.
2. Collaboration with programmers: When you work with developers who can handle the code, the exported code provides an efficient way to implement your vision and make specific adjustments.
3. Cost savings: Exporting the code can save costs, especially if you opt for cost-effective hosting solutions.
4. Backup copy: The exported code includes a copy of your site and its resources. This serves as a backup in case you run into unexpected issues with your Webflow account.
5. Independence: With the exported code, you are no longer bound to the Webflow platform. This gives you the freedom to move your site to other platforms when needed.
However, it's important to note that code export is best for websites that don't require extensive changes all the time. Some features and content are not available in exported code and may not work as expected, such as:
- CMS content and functionality
- User account content and functionality
- E-commerce content and functionality
- Website and/or page protection by password
- Processing form submissions
- Existing form submissions
- reCAPTCHA elements in forms
- Page search function
- Webflow Logic
Here's how to export your website's code in just a few clicks:
- Open your site in the designer.
- Click the export button.
- Select “Prepare ZIP.”
- Download the zip file.
- Drag the files to your server.
An important note about exporting: If you want to use a form on your exported site, note that native Webflow forms will no longer work once exported. However, you have alternative options, such as using Make.com via webhooks (Instructions here) or implementing forms with Tectite, PHP, and a subdomain (Instructions here).
